PHNOM PENH Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism plans to organise Cambodia International Tourism Expo in August next year.
Agence Kampuchea Presse quoted tourism ministry secretary of state and spokesperson, Tith Chantha, saying the expo venue could be in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, or Preah Sihanouk coastal province.
“August is the rainy season, therefore organising different events will attract tourists to visit the kingdom when the travel industry needs support.”
Last year, the Ministry of Tourism organised the Asia-Pacific Tourism Expo with more than 300 stalls at Koh Pich Convention and Exhibition Centre, Phnom Penh, the report said.
inside no 4Prime Minister Hun Sen said, earlier, the country should increase cultural events and offer more activities to boost visits during the low season.
“We need more events to attract more tourists and at the same time we can showcase our culture.”
Last year, Cambodia attracted 4.5 million international tourist arrivals increasing 7.0% from 4.2 million in 2013.
Cambodia is expected to welcome 5 million foreign visitors in 2015 and 7.5 million by 2020.
However, Tourism Minister, Thong Khon, admitted that Cambodia’s tourism would miss its target of 5 million arrivals, this year, due to the global situation, including terrorism and the outbreaks of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), along with Russia’s economic crisis.
But the year-end figure will not be less than last year arrivals of 4.5 million visits, the minister estimated.
