PHNOM PENH Cambodia Prime Minister, Hun Sen, called on national agencies to beef up security protection for tourists recommending clearer cooperation with regional agencies and foreign countries to fight all forms of terrorism.
His comments come after Thailand’s capital suffered a bomb attack, 17 August that killed 20 and injured 120 mainly Chinese tourists.
Agence Kampuchea Presse quoted the PM saying: “We cannot eliminate all risks for tourists especially from a terrorist attack, but we need to be better at reducing risks and ensuring visitors are confident to stay in our country.
inside no 3“We need to seek cooperation and create opportunities to improve our security and ensure we are not a target for terrorism… this will make our tourism services better,” he told local media.
Last year, Cambodia attracted 4.5 million international tourist arrivals increasing 7.0% from 4.2 million in 2013.
Bangkok’s Erawan Shrine explosion is seen as a wake-up call for neighbouring countries, especially after claims that immigration officials allegedly took bribes to allow the bombers to enter the country at will. It was the most damming revelation to come out of the police investigation and one that may compromise the immigration bureau’s reputation with its counterparts across the region if shown to be true.
