Cambodia arrivals climb

PHNOM PENH Cambodia’s tourist arrivals registered an increase of 1.0% in September, according to the country’s statistics and tourist Information Department.
It recorded 314,459 trips compared to 311,388 during the same month last year.
Released by the Ministry of Tourism, Monday, the latest data showed Vietnam led supply markets with 64,119 visits, down 3.7% from 66,579 during the same month in 2014.
Other markets in the top five were: China (51,503; +21.3%); Laos (13,585; +27.9%); and Thailand (27,570; -2.5%); and South Korea (18,676; -13.5%).inside no 1
inside no 1In September, 52.7% (165,852) of all international visitors arrived by airlines. Siem Reap Airport received the major market share, 27.7% (87,183). Phnom Penh Airport secured a market share of 25.0% (78,669).
Overland travel accounted for 45.1% (141,895) through checkpoints with Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, while sea travel was a small 2.1% (6,712).
In addition, the data showed tourist arrivals to Phnom Penh and other destinations enjoyed a market share of 55.0% attracting 193,953, while Siem Reap province, home of Angkor Wat, accounted for 34.2% welcoming 120,506 visits. Coastal areas had a market share of 9.8% with 34,719 visits while ecotourism areas accounted for a 1.0% receiving 3,356 visits.
By region, Asia Pacific accounted for an 84.9% market share and posted an increase of 0.0% supporting 267,094 visits from 267,039.
Africa recorded an increase of 58.4% with 597 visits following by the Middle East (+39.3%; 1,153), Americas (+8.2%; 14,898), Europe (+4.6%; 30,717), and Oceania (-13.8%; 11,556).
Outbound trips by Cambodians in September reached 106,196 increasing 23.4% from 86,031 during the same month last year.
For January to September this year, the country welcomed 3,346,870 international travellers up 4.6% from 3,200,058 visits in 2014.
Outbound trips reached 864,237 growing 22.1% for the first nine months of the year compared to 707,579 trips during the same period last year.
Tourism Minister Thong Khon has urged all tourism operators to be prepared for a bigger influx of Chinese tourists.
“We should strengthen Chinese-speaking skills and include Chinese language on menus and product labels, road signs and produce more Chinese language guides… the ministry do its part to improve tourism facilities to satisfy Chinese tourists.”
