MONDULKIRI  Provincial officials are now attempting to turn the disused Mondulkiri Airport into a public park.
Khmer Times reported the small airport was once used by private helicopters and small planes that flew the 390 km from Phnom Penh to the province, one of the most sparsely populated in Cambodia. There have been no commercial flights at the airport since 2005.inside no 2

Provincial representatives also point out that the airport is located in the centre of town and an alternative airport is being planned 20 km from the provincial capital, well away from residential areas.
Construction of a park at the airport started a year ago, and officials say funds are needed from the central government to finish the project and turn the airport into a community recreational area.
The province borders Kratie to the west, Stung Treng to the northwest, Ratanakiri to the north and Vietnam to the east and south. The capital Mondulkiri is 390 km from Phnom Penh.
