SIEM REAP Angkor Wat will undergo a major restoration in 2017, according to Apsara Authority, which manages the historic temple complex.
Phnom Penh Post media reported the announcement on the restoration followed the 24th session of the International Coordinating Committee for Angkor (ICC-Angkor) at which conservation, restoration, sustainable development and tourism were discussed in detail, earlier this week.
Apsara Authority spokesman, Long Kosal, was quoted saying that the meeting focused on a plan to replace an original wooden ceiling on the monumental bas-relief known as the “Churning of the Sea of Milk Gallery” at the east of the temple.
inside no 3“We have discussed restoring the wooden ceiling for a few years, and today we received approval from the ICC experts… this first effort to replace the wooden structure will be based on an ancient fragment from Angkor Wat now held at the Guimet Museum in Paris.”
Apsara Authority has previously cooperated with the World Monument Fund (WMF) to develop plans to emulate the original ceiling design, according to Department of Conservation of Monuments and Preventive Archaeology director, Ly Vanna, adding the plan will be implemented in June 2017.
The authority also said that the session sought to clarify its photography policy, noting that tourists and journalists had never been banned from photographing inside Angkor Park, but that some restrictions were placed on those shooting videos and pictures for commercial purposes.
During January to October this year, 1.67 million international tourists visited Angkor temples, a 2% increase compared to the same period last year.
In October alone, 153,308 foreign tourists visited Angkor temples up 4.09%. It generated revenue of over USD4.3 million from Angkor ticket sales, up 4.52% compared with the same period last year.
The entrance fees for Angkor temples and monuments in Siem Reap costs USD20 for a day visit, USD40 for three days and USD60 for a week.
The park was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1992.
