Cambodia’s airports looking busy

PHNOM PENH Passenger traffic at all three of Cambodia’s international airports should grow by 7% this year.

Phnom Penh Post quoted Cambodia Airports’ communications director, Khek Norinda, saying the company forecasts increases at the three key gateways with a double-digit growth at Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville airports.

“Traffic growth at Siem Reap airport was not be so dramatic due to a decline in overall tourist arrivals,” he said.

inside no 3Phnom Penh International Airport handled a record 3 million passengers, last year, 15.5% more than in 2014, according to Cambodia Airports’ Routes Development manager, Pichr Sopontara.

More than 3.2 million passengers passed through Siem Reap’s airport a 9.0% year-on-year increase. Meanwhile, Sihanoukville’s airport saw a massive growth in passenger traffic of 84.3%,  but it was on much smaller base of 51,000 passenger movements that surged to 94,000 last year.

China was the major source of passengers at all three airports, the manager said.

Airlines are also expanding their services to Cambodia. All three international airports recorded over 70,000 aircraft movements last year, a 9.1% increase over 2014.

Several airlines are due to add services to Cambodian cities this year. They include THAI Smile preparing to launch a service to Siem Reap, 1 February and Hong Kong Airlines to Phnom Penh, 27 February, from its Hong Kong base.
