Preah Sokunveary Ceremony (Ceremony to give bath “fragrant water” to Buddhist monks) to Samdech Preah Sanghareach Bour Kry, Supreme Patriarch of the Cambodian Dhamayutakanikaya Order,turning from 66 to 67 years old, was held at Svay Por Per Pagoda located in Sangkat Tonle Basac, Khan Chamcarmorn, on Sunday 23rd January 2011.
Presided over by the Kingdom’s Premiere Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, and Lok Chum Teav Dr. On that occasion, Governor of Phnom Penh H.E KEP Chuk Tema delivered welcoming address pointed out the rapid progress of Phnom Penh Capital City in terms of religion and society management.
In this auspicious occasion, Samdech Prime Minister expressed gratitude to Samdech Bour Kri for leading and preserving Buddhism. Samdech Prime Minister also recalled that during the Pol Pot regime, all infrastructures were completely destroyed including religion. After the deliberation day 7th January 1979, Samdech is fulfilled with rapid progress and achievements, Buddhism has also been enhanced.
Samdech continued that the connection between religion and society in which the government shall supplement infrastructures such as pagodas, Buddhist houses, Pali Schools, Buddhist multi-purposes halls, ponds, wells and etc, and religion gives us back morals and behavior education, and learning darma remains important tasks for development at the present and future, especially Buddhism play a significant role which prompt followers to believe in and contribute to development process.
It should be highlighted that Samdech and Her Excellency donated 310,000 USD to build Sihamoni Reach Buddhist University located in Svay Por Per. The total cost of the building exceeds 480,000 USD. Generous individuals donate 99,000 USD. H.E KEP Chuk Tema and Her Excellency donate 20,000 USD.
