The government is eyeing to turn Stung Treng’s Thalaboriwath district, an area known for the presence of tiny black stones that locals refer to as “black rice”, into a new tourist attraction.
Located 400 kilometres north of Phnom Penh, Thalaboriwath district is home to a site that contains the little pebbles, known in Khmer as “ang kor neang kmao”, which experts are now studying to know more about their composition and history.
“The ‘Black Rice area’ is considered to have cultural and historical significance in the province, and officials are now studying it and compiling information,” said On Porshean, director of Streng Treng’s tourism department.
“We want to turn this area into a cultural and historical site. We are now working on the development of tour packages to the area.”
