Commuters in the kingdom now have access to a new type of vehicle, with the Piaggio Ape officially entering the local market last week.
The Italy-made, three-wheeled vehicle was launched Friday in Phnom Penh, and will be used by local drivers and ride-hailing apps like PassApp.
The Piaggio Ape is now expected to become a common sight in Cambodia, like Bajaj three wheelers and remorques, which are the most widely used vehicles for hire in the streets of Phnom Penh.
“Commuters will be able to flag them down like a regular tuk tuk or arrange a ride with the touch of a button through a ride-hailing app,” said Vong Pisey, CEO of Italian Motors, the company responsible for the launch.
He explained that the vehicle will be used by some of the main players in the ride-hailing app business, including Grab, PassApp, WeGo, Tos Tos, CamGo, 711Go Taxi and Exnet.
Tourism Minister Thong Khon, who presided over the launching ceremony, said the new vehicles will do their part in helping to cope with the predicted increase in the volume of tourists, explaining that, “The new models will be very helpful for the tourism sector.”
