The Ministry of Tourism recently announced a new contest to find the best community-based tourism sites in the Kingdom and has called on villages and communities around the country to submit their application.

The competition is part of a governmental campaign to promote clean cities and quality service in the tourism industry, according to a statement from the ministry.

“The contest aims to improve management practices at community-based tourism sites and help make them more sustainable,” the ministry said, adding that it also seeks to diversify the tourism offer in the country by encouraging communities to come up with new services and products.

The application period is already open and will close in June, with the winners of the contest being announced in December. Prizes for the best communities have not been disclosed.

Tith Chantha, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Tourism, told Khmer Times that the competition will help elevate quality standards in the nation’s tourism industry.

“Ecotourism is now an important part of our tourism industry. It is important to create contests and programmes to support it,” he said.
