The Garment Manufacturers Association of Cambodia yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding with Singapore-based Cleantech Solar to install 124 photovoltaic panels in the rooftop of its head office in Phnom Penh.
The solar installation is expected to help reduce carbon emissions by more than 75 tonnes every year, said GMAC’s chairman Van Sou Ieng.
“Sustainability is becoming a key expectation from global apparel players; adopting renewable energies is a key part of this,” Mr Sou Ieng said. “Going solar is an important step that our local industry must take to defend and increase its market share in the long run in this competitive landscape.”
He said Cambodia has great potential for solar energy production, with almost 6 hours of peak sunlight every day. To take advantage of this potential, the Electricity Authority of Cambodia recently published a new framework that will help companies install solar panels for self-consumption, Mr Sou Ieng explained.
He added that solar energy is one of the most attractive and flexible forms of renewable energy that can be adopted by the garment industry.
