With the rise of living standards and incomes in the Kingdom, more and more Cambodians are seeking medical treatment abroad. According to the Ministry of Tourism, 1.75 million locals travelled abroad last year for medical purposes and for vacationing, mostly to Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam. This is an increase of more than 22 percent compared to 2016.

Jiaranai Boonprasatsuk, marketing director of the Heart Centre at Phayathai 2 International Hospital in Bangkok, sits down with Khmer Times’ Mom Sophon to discuss the rise of medical tourism in the region.

KT: Why do patients choose to come to Phyathai 2 International Hospital? What sets you apart from other medical institutions?

Ms Jiaranai: Phyathai 2 Hospital is a tertiary hospital offering high-quality medical services in a wide range of specialties and subspecialties. Our main expertise recognized as a centre of excellence includes cardiology, neurology, trauma and replantation and orthopedics. Accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, the hospital is committed to delivering the highest standards of patient care in a safe and efficient working environment.

KT: Do a lot of Cambodians come to your hospital for treatment?

Ms Jiaranai: Yes, we have a large number of Cambodian patients visiting us every year for medical treatment. Indeed, Cambodians represent the number one nationality when it comes to foreign patients.

KT: What is your opinion on health tourism?

Ms Jiaranai: Nowadays, people are more health conscious than in the past. Many choose to combine their travels with health check-ups and cosmetic treatments. The combination of these elements creates a wonderful and relaxing holiday for mind and body.

KT: More and more people in Cambodia are becoming concerned about the food they eat. Is this trend also happening in Thailand?

Ms Jiaranai: As it is the case in Cambodia, in Thailand people are also becoming more health conscious and worried about their diet. Eating right is the best way to be healthy, so it is no surprise that in both countries people are choosing to eat better. At Phyathai 2 Hospital, we have set up the Total Lifestyle Modification Programme, which helps educate patients to lead healthy lifestyles, advising them on the right food choices and in maintaining a healthy level of physical activity.
