The Ministry of Tourism predicts that Cambodia will need at least 100,000 additional guesthouse and hotel rooms in the next decade to face the growing number of foreign visitors and domestic tourists.
“To answer growing demand brought about by the increasing number of tourists, Cambodia will need 100,000 new rooms by 2028, 60,000 of which must be in luxury establishments,” Minister Thong Khon said.
Mr Khon called on international investors to build new hotels and guesthouses in Cambodia to meet that demand.
Cambodia now has more than 800 hotels, amounting to a total of more than 46,000 rooms. Of those, at least 20,000 are in five-star hotels.
The minister said that 15 million foreign tourists will be visiting the country every year by 2030.
About 6.2 million foreign visitors are expected to enter Cambodia by the end of 2018, and 7 million by 2020, the minister said, adding that the country is in dire need of better infrastructure to face forecast demand in the sector.
