Nearly 5 million Cambodians travelled inside the country during Khmer New Year, a 67 percent increase compared to last year.
According to figures from the Ministry of Tourism, 4.6 million locals travelled inside Cambodia during the three-day holiday, while 83,000 foreigners visited the country during the same period, a 98 percent increase.
Battambang province, with 870,034 visitors, was the most popular destination, followed by Svay Rieng (467,505 tourists) and Siem Reap (386,661) provinces, according to the ministry.
The number of tourists to the coast – which includes Preah Sihanouk, Kampot, Kep, and Koh Kong – did not increase during the holiday, the report shows.
Tourism Minister Thong Khon said the increase in travellers during the popular holiday was the result of Cambodians enjoying higher incomes.
“Tourists enjoyed the many Sangkranta events that were held throughout the country. These events helped increase the number of tourists this year,” the minister said.
