The city is inviting tourists to come have a look and join in new year festivities. Planners are confident more tourists will travel to their quaint yet vibrant little city this year.
President of the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia (UYFC) in Battambang, Sor Ratha, said the celebrations in the city are featuring five giant sculptures along with several live events, traditional art shows, craft displays, food stalls and live concerts.
The five giant sculptures include corn, pineapple, ‘kranlan’ (sticky rice in bamboo), orange fruit and, of course, the inevitable new year rabbit.
The artistic display is a creation of young members of the UYFC from various districts around Battambang province.
Ratha said that the UYFC is cooperating with the provincial administration for five days between Friday and Sunday to showcase the grand public event.
He added that all preparations for the Battambang Sankranta are complete.
“This year’s Sankranta event welcomes national and international tourists to experience some treasured Cambodian national traditions. We hope our heritage will last very long,” Rotha said.
Deputy Governor of Battambang province, Soeum Bunrith, said yesterday that this year’s Battambang Sankranta will host popular games, trade and craft fairs, and display agricultural products.
Live concerts and an abundance of food stalls will round out the event.
He wants families to know that a “cool area” is ready for youngsters to play with water, including free use of water guns and coloured talcum powder.
Everyone can enjoy traditional cultural performances along with Kun Khmer martial arts competitions.
“This year we have prepared many decorations on main streets and bridges, which we hope will attract and please visiting tourists from everywhere,” he said.
