Siem Reap in Cambodia will be the most sought-after tourist destination for Australians next year, according to Skyscanner’s Travel Trends 2025 report quoted by SBS News recently.
This surge in popularity is largely driven by the region’s rich culture, stunning temples, delicious food, diverse entertainment activities, and favourable weather, the report said.
According to it, Australians will be spending more money on travel in 2025, with surprising new trending destinations.
It added that for Australian travellers, Japan has been the top destination until recently, but in 2025, Siem Reap in Cambodia has been ticked as the top trending travel spot for them with interest in the destination increasing by a whopping 529 percent.
The report also identified the top experiences and factors influencing Australians’ choice of destination. The biggest factor is the weather (66 per cent), followed by the attractions (65 per cent), food (63 per cent) and culture (59 per cent).
Despite the escalating cost-of-living, travel is still a priority for Australians, with 43 per cent planning on travelling more in 2025.
Top Sopheak, Secretary of State and a spokesman for the Ministry of Tourism (MoT), told Khmer Times on Monday that Australia is an important tourism market for Cambodia. He noted that after the Covid-19 crisis abated, there has been a steady increase in Australian visitors to the country.
Sopheak said that in 2023, 87,207 Australian tourists visited Cambodia, an increase of 131 percent compared to 2022. In the first nine months of 2024, the number of Australian tourists exceeded 70,000, a significant increase, especially in visits to Siem Reap.
