INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — Myths and Mountains, an award-winning Incline Village-based experiential tour operator that offers active lifestyle trips in Asia, Southeast Asia, South America and Africa, was recognized in this year’s annual “50 Tours of a Lifetime” issue by National Geographic Traveler magazine for their new Untamed Cambodia tour.

“To have the incredible variety of Cambodia honored by National Geographic Traveler is thrilling for both Myths and Mountains and the people of this richly diverse country,” said President and Founder Dr. Antonia (Toni) Neubauer. “Yes, there is more to see than Angkor Wat!”

This unique ‘Untamed Cambodia’ tour combines incredible monuments of the Khmer civilization, like Angkor Wat, with an intimate view of Cambodia’s rich biodiversity and wildlife. Guests spend valuable time with local communities that are engaged in preserving the rich heritage and wildlife of the country.

Travelers experience a behind-the-scenes visit at Phnom Tamao Rescue Centre for a lesson in bear-keeping, visit and stay at the Elephant Valley Project, take a wildlife trek through the jungles of Mondulkhiri, go dolphin watching on the Mekong and Kampi, and bird watching at the Ang Trapeang Thmor Sarus Crane Reserve and Prek Toal.

The tour also features opportunities to enjoy the classic highlights of Cambodia — a cycle ride through Phnom Penh, a sunset boat cruise on the Mekong, a balloon ride over Angkor Wat, explorations of the key ancient temples of Angkor Thom or Banteay Srei, and historical sites like the National Museum or the infamous Killing Fields.

National Geographic Traveler’s selection process was competitive and their editorial team worked long and hard to find 2013’s most authentic, most innovative, most immersive, best-guided, and most sustainable tours.

“This year marks the 125th anniversary of the National Geographic Society. The tours we selected capture that spirit of exploration,” said Executive Editor Norie Quintos. “They push the boundaries of mainstream tourism, whether taking travelers to the far corners of the globe, or helping them dive deep into the culture of familiar destinations.”

Founded in 1988 by veteran adventurer Toni Neubauer, Myths and Mountains fosters intimate cross-cultural experiences. The company’s tours are designed to take travelers to the very heart of the places they are visiting, whether that means trekking the remote passes of Bhutan or learning traditional medicine from the shamans of the Amazon.

These efforts have established a solid place for Myths and Mountains in the adventure travel industry; the company was chosen as one of National Geographic Adventure’s Best Adventure Travel Companies in 2009, won Travel + Leisure’s 2010 Global Vision Award, and Neubauer herself was chosen as a Top Travel Specialist by Condé Nast Traveler in 2011. In 2013, Myths and Mountains was selected as a “Tours of a Lifetime” recipient from National Geographic Traveler Magazine.
