A team from China’s Shenzhen city, in Guangdong province, is in Cambodia to study the possibility of drafting a master plan to guide the development of Sihanoukville.
In a meeting with Minister of Industry Cham Prasidh on Tuesday, Xiao Sima, head of the Shenzhen delegation, said the master plan would be drafted using Shenzhen as a model.
“We will use our experience developing Shenzhen to develop Sihanoukville in line with the government’s Industrial Development Policy for 2015-2025,” Mr Xiao was quoted as saying in a Facebook post from the ministry.
The government aims to turn Preah Sihanouk province into a “second Shenzhen city”, the ministry said.
Mr Prasidh said he welcomed the project and added that once completed, the study will be sent to the government to be reviewed.
The minister said the potential master plan would help develop Sihanoukville into a modern, green city, as well as an attractive investment destination and an industrial hub.
