South Korean firm SK E&S Co., Ltd this week unveiled a project to build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in Cambodia.

The company, an affiliate of SK Group, presented the project during a meeting Wednesday with the Ministry of Mines and Energy.

SK E&S started operations in 1999 producing town gas. Since then, the company has expanded into the LNG, community energy, renewable energies, and overseas energy businesses.

“Wishing to help Cambodia overcome the current power shortage, the company announced a project to invest in the energy sector in our country,” ministry director-general Victor Jona told Khmer Times yesterday.

Mr Jona said the investment proposal may be turned down.

“The project may not be approved because the master plan for the energy sector is not yet finished,” he said.

“Once we finish, we can see what types of investment we need to meet our energy demand,” he said, adding that “the company will have to wait until the plan is ready if they want to invest.”
