The newest solar farm in the Kingdom, built in Kampong Speu by SchneiTec Renewable, has been completed and is fully operational, the Ministry of Mines and Energy announced yesterday.
The farm, located on 200 hectares of land in Kampong Speu’s Oudong district, can produce 60 megawatts, according to Victor Jona, director-general of the department of mines.
In April, SchneiTec Renewable, a joint venture of Chinese and local partners, announced that the first phase of the project had been completed, supplying 20 MW to the national grid.
SchneiTec Renewable’s park is the second solar farm in Cambodia, following a 10-MW park in Svay Rieng province’s Bavet town that came online in 2018.
The government has approved a raft of renewable energy projects since the country started to suffer power shortages earlier this year.
“Solar energy and other forms of green energy don’t pollute the environment, so they are a priority,” Mr Jona said.
Speaking at an event last month, Keo Ratanak, director-general of Electricity Authority of Cambodia (EDC), said the government aims to increase investments in solar energy investment by 12 percent in 2019, and by 20 percent over the next three years.
