Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), has praised Cambodia for its strong macroeconomic achievements and diversification efforts.
She made the comment in a meeting on Mar. 27 with H.E. Mrs. Cham Nimul, Cambodian Minister of Commerce, on the sidelines of Cambodia’s 3rd Trade Policy Review in Geneva, Switzerland.
In the meeting, H.E. Minister and the Director-General exchanged views on the role of the multilateral trading system in supporting socio-economic development of the least-developed Members and the importance of trade policy review mechanism in strengthening the transparency principle in the WTO.
Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala extended her appreciation to the active participation of Cambodia in all aspects of the WTO’s works, particularly Cambodia’s leadership role in the LDC group and fulfilment of many commitments including the 100 percent implementation of the Trade Facilitation Agreement and the ratification of the Fisheries Subsidies Agreement.
The Director-General also praised Cambodia for its strong macroeconomic achievements and diversification efforts.
H.E. Mrs. Cham Nimul valued the comments made by the Director-General and underscored Cambodia’s support for the open, rules-based multilateral trading system which has provided many benefits to Cambodia.
She considered the Trade Policy Review as an important mechanism for Members to understand Cambodia’s trade policies and practices and for Cambodia to reflect on its implementation.
The commerce minister was pleased to see Members’ enthusiasm and constructive engagement which indicated Members’ high level of interests on Cambodia’s trade policies and practices.
