Airports of Thailand reports its January data showed increases in both aircraft movements and passengers at six airports under its management.
AoT released, Monday, its latest data on air traffic in January showing improvements in aircraft movements of 13.82% to 48,357 from 42,484 movements as well as passenger traffic up 14.11% to 7,665,428 from 6,717,806.
However, the main gateway, Suvarnabhumi Airport, reported a dip in performance.
The airport registered a loss in international aircraft movements of 4.61%, down from 20,146 to 19,218 in January. Domestic movements dropped 51.64% from 10,891 to 5,267 movements.
International passengers grew 7.21%, up from 3,458,095 to 3,707,325, while the domestic sector reported a loss of 47.95%, down from 1,536,999 to 800,066 passengers.
Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport registered massive growth in both aircraft movements and passenger traffic. International aircraft movements at the airport increased of 27,575.00% from 12 to 3,321, while the domestic movement recorded a growth of 3,897.63% from 211 to 8,345 movements due to the shift of domestic airlines that grossly inflated the totals when compared with the same month last year.
The airport is now officially once more an international airport with AirAsia serving all of its regional points. All Thailand’s domestic airlines are now based at Don Mueang. Only THAI and Bangkok Airways continue to serve their domestic networks from Suvarnabhumi, due to the need to provide connecting services for their international flights.
The northern gateway, Chiang Mai International Airport, continued to show growth in January. Both international and domestic aircraft movements registered double-digit increases of 17.56% (467 to 549) and 10.78% (2,951 to 3,269). International passenger traffic grew 24.81% (53,102 to 66,278), while domestic traffic grew 6.84% (407,056 to 434,883).
The southern gateway, Phuket International Airport also registered growth in all sectors. International aircraft movements gained 4.15%, from 3,419 to 3,561. Domestic movements grew 6.45%, from 2,498 to 2,659. Both international and domestic passenger traffic grew 5.58% (578,953 to 611,242) and 3.29% (422,398 to 436,315).
Chiang Rai International Airport reported a decline in aircraft of 6.42% (685 to 641), while passenger traffic grew 6.38% (94,240 to 100,248). Orient Thai stopped its daily operations to the far north town.
Hat Yai International Airport reported growth in both aircraft movements and passenger traffic in January. Aircraft movements were up 19.35% from 1,204 to 1,437. Passenger traffic registered a 14.96% growth from 166,868 to 191,831 passengers.
