JAKARTA - Indonesia's Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry wants actors, actresses as well as public figures in the country to help promote domestic tourism. "This is very important because the young generation love to emulate actors and actresses," the ministry's domestic tourism promotional director, Tazbir was quoted by Antara, the national Indonesian news agency, as saying here Tuesday.
He said there were many interesting local destinations which remained under tourists' radars. Tazbir hoped that the involvement of public figures would help put the country's hidden paradises on the tourist map. "We are going to continue promoting local tourism and our mission is to mobilize domestic tourists to local destinations. Thus, there will not be many Indonesians traveling overseas," he added.
The ministry has allocated US$2.61 million this year for the programme and has already set a target to increase domestic tourist trips to 252 million this year. Indonesia recorded a huge increase of local visitor trips from 202.7 million trips in 2004 to 245.2 million trips in 2012.
