HANOI Aviation authority says Vietnam is expanding its airports to accommodate an increase in travellers to the country.
Airports Corporation of Vietnam’s Airport Operation Department deputy director, Vu Pham Nguyen An, affirmed key expansion projects at six airports across the country, including two at major airports in Hanoi and in Ho Chi Minh City.
He said the construction of Terminal 2 (T2) of Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi is scheduled to be completed by year-end and will ultimately further expansion that will raise capacity from10 million to 15 million passengers a year by 2020.
After 2020, the government will determine whether to proceed with T3 and T4 to increase the airport’s capacity to 50 million passengers a year.
Other projects include an upgrade of the domestic terminal and expansion of the international terminal (T2) of Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City. The domestic terminal will be expanded to 40,048 square metres to handle a capacity of 113,000 flight movements and 15 million passengers a year.
The first phase of the project was completed and made fully operational last April, and other phases are expected to ready by late 2015.
For its T2 expansion project, ACV will expand the left and right wings of the international terminal, adding 40 check-in counters and two waiting halls to increase capacity to 13 million passengers a year.
The deputy director added the company was also implementing expansion projects at international airports such as Cam Ranh in Khanh Hoa province and Cat Bi in Hai Phong city and in local airports such as Vinh in Nghe An province and Tho Xuan in Thanh Hoa province.
The plan also incuded the Long Thanh International Airport construction, a hub in the Southeast Asian region, in Dong Nai province’s Long Thanh district.
The airport will handle 100 million passengers and five million tonnes of freight a year. The airport project will be submitted to the National Assembly for approval this October, he said.
