The Falkland Islands Tourist Board has announced plans to open a London office next year.

The tourism board is currently looking for a director of international communications who will lead promotion and marketing of the islands in the UK, US and emerging markets.

Training programmes, seminars and events will also be held regularly for travel agents and tour operators.

The appointment will be in addition to managing director Tony Mason who will stay in the role until the end of the season.

“We have for some time been considering the next steps to ensure the country’s tourism sector continues to grow and our board of directors and I believe this is the right step forward,” said Mason.

He added: “Having a strong base in the United Kingdom and continuing to develop partnerships in the United States and with emerging markets will ensure the message gets out that the Falkland Islands are truly the most beautiful and unspoilt nature and wildlife offering in the world.”

UK visitor arrivals are expected to reach 3,000 this year, up 20% on 2013.
