QUANG NAM Vietnam’s Quang Nam province has instructed its department of culture, sports and tourism to back a project to train heritage experts and restore heritage sites in the province.
The department vice director, Ho Xuan Tinh, told local media that the project also involves the setting up of a vocational training centre.
“The aim is to increase management competency at heritage sites and this in turn will improve tourism.”
The project is being launched as part of co-operation between the relevant agencies of the department and Quang Nam Vocational School.
inside no 8The project will cost USD1.3 million, of which 70% of which will be funded by the Italian government and the rest by the Polytechnic University of Milan (Polimi) and the local budget.
Under the project (2015 to 2018), the Quang Nam Vocational College School will co-operate with the management board of My Son Relic and Tourism Department to launch a six-month course taught by experts from the Polytechnic University of Milan.
The 120 trainees will be university graduates, young officials and lecturers working in the province and nearby provinces, who are concerned about heritage preservation.
After finishing the courses, about 10 or 12 outstanding trainees will continue to be trained as experts in methods of restoration and preservation of heritage.
In addition to receiving financial support from governments and international organisations, the province has set up its own projects to restore heritage sites.
The project will cost USD3.8 million to restore national and provincial heritage sites 2016 to 2020.
There are about 60 national and 300 provincial heritage sites in Quang Nam province.
Among the best known are the Phuoc Kieu bronze casting village in Dien Phuong Commune, Dien Ban Town; Kim Bong woodworking village in Cam Kim Commune and Thanh Ha pottery village in Thanh Ha Commune, Hoi An Town.
Quang Nam is home to three world-renowned attractions – UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites Hoi An Ancient Town and My Son Sanctuary, and the Cu Lao Cham UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.
During the first seven months of this year, Quang Nam welcomed nearly 1.9 million visitors, of which 1.2 million were domestic tourists.
