BANGKOK – Following the success of the first Phangan Colour Moon Festival, which was held from 9-13 December, last year, the event’s second edition is set to return on the same dates this year but with greater celebrations and more exciting activities under the theme ‘Island of Power, energised by the moon’.

Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, Governor of Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) said, “This year the five-day five-night festival will provide a new experience for visitors of Ko Phangnan, which has been most recognised for its white sandy beaches, crystal clear sea and the famous full moon party, as well as for being the location for yoga teacher training. The event will also unveil the island’s local way of life surrounding the coconut and squid fishing industries.”

The Phangan Colour Moon Festival 2015 is jointly organised by Samui Tourism Coordination Centre, Tourism Authority of Thailand, Ko Phangan Hotel Association, Surat Thani Provincial Administration Organization, Bangkok Airways Public Company Limited and several public and private organisations. It will be held at the Phangan Royal Ship Memorial Museum, Thong Sala Pier, Ko Phangan, Surat Thani.

Mr. Yuthasak said, “The event is aimed at boosting the awareness of Ko Phangan as the island destination rich in cultural ways of life, historical sites, and a plethora of untapped natural attractions. Few people knew that King Rama V the Great of Thailand spent holidays on this beautiful island for 14 times plus two stopovers during 1888 – 1909.”

Several kings of Thailand including King Rama V the Great, King Rama VI, King Rama VII and the present His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej frequently visited this lovely island due to its beautiful beaches and abundant natural resources. Visitors can still visit the royal pavilion of King Rama V the Great near Thansadet Waterfall and the island’s three waterfalls where he named them as Thansadet, Thanprapas and Thanprawet, and inscribed his royal initials on five stones nearby the waterfalls as memoirs of his royal visits.

At the Phangan Colour Moon Festival 2015, visitors can explore and discover the latest developments on the island as well as the charming past through several activities including a photo exhibition and competition and painting exhibition telling the charm of Ko Phangan in the good old days, beach party fashion show, body paint competition, and bartender competition.

Throughout the five days, there will be demonstrations of Ko Phangan’s way of life, sale of local products, seafood floating market, concert, and sporting activities. The event also incorporates a travel trade fair providing opportunities for visitors to shop for interesting tourism products and services.
