Sheraton hires first female GM in Vietnam

30 Sep 2011  2066 | World Travel News

Less than two years after its opening, Sheraton Nha Trang has broken a tradition and hired a female general manager, Catherine Racsko.

The hotel claims it is a first for an international brand in Vietnam, although local hotel companies have hired female general managers in the past.

Sheraton is still very much a male dominated territory in its management ranks, but the token hiring was given a massive spin by the public relations team.

That in itself suggests the group has still some ways to travel to achieve an equal opportunity policy in human resources. If it had achieved equality goals, the appointment of a female GM would have not warranted  a special announcement or a comment from a senior regional vice president.

“We are pleased to have Catherine on the team, and I know with her experience in Asia and strong sales and marketing background she will be a tremendous asset to Sheraton Nha Trang,” said Wayne Buckingham, regional vice president for Starwood Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia.

“It is also good to see more female GMs heading Starwood hotels in Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia.” he added.

There are just three female managers in Thailand.

The 30-story Sheraton Nha Trang debuted in March 2010 as the first Sheraton in Vietnam outside of Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.
