Asean Welcomes First Official Ambassador From Azerbaijan

JAKARTA, June 26 (Bernama) -- Tamerlan Karayev, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Azerbaijan to Asean, on Monday presented his letter of credence to Asean Secretary-General Dr Surin Pitsuwan.

The event was held at the Asean Secretariat here.

During the ceremony, Karayev underlined Azerbaijan's commitment in pursuing its cooperation with Asean.

Among other things, he introduced some potential areas of cooperation with Asean such as historical education, musical and cultural exchanges, oil exploration, agricultural exports, especially fruits and vegetables, and also tourism, the secretariat said in a statement Tuesday.

Karayev, who is also designated as Azerbaijan's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Indonesia, Singapore and forth coming to the Philippines and Timor-Leste, also sought the possibility of investing in Asean countries.

Meanwhile, Dr Surin said stability in the region would encourage more investments in the area and create opportunities for future cooperation between the two regions.

He also encouraged Azerbaijan to play a greater role in enhancing cooperation between Asean and the Economic Cooperation Organisation (ECO) where Azerbaijan is among its 10-member countries.

The secretariat, he said, looked forward to working closely with Karayev to further enhance the relationship between Asean and Azerbaijan and the rest of ECO member states.

Karayev has conveyed a letter of invitation to Dr Surin to attend the proposed 12th Asean-ECO Ministerial Meeting, which will be hosted by Azerbaijan on Oct 15.
