State of emergency declared in Bangkok

Thailand's Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva was forced to declare a state of emergency in Bangkok and its vicinity yesterday.

The declaration came after anti-government protesters or "red shirts" managed to briefly break into parliament.

PM Vejjajiva said, "The government has tried its best to enforce the law, but violations of the law have increased.

"Our main goal is to bring the country back to normal and make our law sacred once again."
The red shirts have demanded the dissolution of parliament and have called for a new election within 15 days.

A Thailand Authority of Tourism spokesperson has stressed that the declaration has been contained within Bangkok and its immediate vicinity.
