Seychelles Ministry of Tourism and Culture conscious of the need for healthy staff

(Forimmediaterelease.net) Staff from the Department of Culture from the Ministry of Tourism&Culture benefitted from a free talk on nutrition facilitated by the Ministry of Health’s Senior Nutritionist Vereine Louis-Marie.

The talk centered on the dos and don’ts of nutrition with emphasis on the 16-point dietary guidelines devised by the Seychelles Ministry for Health. Mrs. Louis-Marie pointed out that we need to surmount the misconception about the word “diet” itself and not use the word merely when we go on a weight-loss regime. A “diet” she continued is simply our daily consumption of food and drinks, thus the importance of knowing what our needs are on a daily basis, and to eat and drink appropriately. Having a healthy diet, accompanied by exercise, will automatically lead to weight loss.

Inquisitive participants asked a broad range of questions varying from calorie intake, differences between the various types of fat in foods, the required daily portions of all the dietary categories, to several other pertinent issues.

Participants were amazed to learn that above the rule to eat five portions of fruits and vegetables a day, it is equally important to eat what Mrs. Louis-Marie specified as “a rainbow of colors,” meaning to include a variety of colors in the fruits and vegetables we consume daily, revealing the nutritional value and health benefits of the various colors.

All participants left the session with a whole new concept about nutrition and the health benefits of a healthy diet.
