Peru aiming to attract 6 million tourists by 2016

LIMA, Peru - Peru is aiming to attract 6 million tourists by 2016, according to Carlos Canales, head of the National Chamber of Tourism.

This year, he said, Peru saw 2.9 million tourists, who generated $3.3 billion in revenue for the country’s tourism industry.

Canales said that despite recent tourism growth, this figure is still below regional tourism trends.

"We should redirect advertising policies to capture the most attractive markets and start connecting with the market segments which are still not coming to Peru," Canales was quoted as saying by Peruthisweek.com.

If the country were to reach its 2016 goal, it would see tourism revenue increase to $7.5 billion, the website said, citing an article from El Comercio.

Canales said promotional efforts should be concentrated in markets such as Russia, and China, as well as Scandinavian and Arab countries.
