The United Nations tourism body has called on the governments of Central Asia in future to unite and cooperate when planning their tourism strategies.
Meeting with Emomali Rahmon, President of Tajikistan, Taleb Rifai, UNWTO Secretary-General, continued to pursue the UNWTO Silk Road Project, an extensive cross-border tourism initiative
?Regional cooperation is key to harnessing the tourism potential of Central Asia. The Silk Road is a concept that requires cooperation beyond individual borders and is an excellent example of such cooperation,? said Dr Rifai.
?Tajikistan is an important stop along the Silk Road and is working with other countries to convert this resource into an integrated tourism product.?
The historic ?Silk Road? stretches from Europe to China, and passes through countries including Arabia, Egypt and India, over land as well as water.
A long-spanning project, the UNWTO Silk Road project aims to draw attention to the problems involved with visa and other administrative procedures which detract visitors to cross borders along the iconic Silk Road.
