The Oil Spill and Alabama Tourism

25 May 2010  2049 | World Travel News

As the massive oil spill oozes toward gulf coast communities, some Alabama rental agencies are getting creative to keep tourists coming.

Many are changing their cancellation policies so that guests aren't afraid to book. The call center at Brett Robinson Resorts is full and busy, a good sign with Memorial Day weekend just days away.

Marie Curran, Director of Marketing and Reservations for Brett Robinson resorts says, ?Business so far so good we're very optimistic when the oil first happened things slowed down and everybody got very nervous about that.?  The beaches are Gulf Shores and Orange Beach's bread and butter, but the oil spill has threatened all that.

?We're losing current reservations and the rate of reservations is not up to where it was last year,? said Mike Foster, Alabama Gulf Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau.

But Brett Robinson isn?t feeling the same hit. And other leasing agencies things are starting to change thanks to some creative cancellations policies.

?We waived all our cancellation policies and fees. Our guest can cancel with us at any time and they will get a full deposit or if they are here and oil comes up on the beach. We'll refund them any unused portion of their rent,? Foster said. Along with their regular four night stay with a fifth night free, Meyer realty is also offering a 30 percent discount on remaining properties if you stay four nights this holiday weekend.
